What is Shingles?

If you know what chickenpox is, you could call Shingles its adult version. As a kid, when we contract chickenpox and after some time, we get better, the virus doesn’t go away. It stays in the brain and spinal cord that later on reactivates when we get older and causes this disease. Shingles is a fatal disease that can cause extreme pain and even damage the nerve permanently.

What is Zostavax?

Zostavax is the first vaccine developed by Merck & Co Inc. Pharmaceuticals for the prevention of herpes zoster commonly known as shingles. The Food & Drug Administration approved the use of the vaccine in 2006. Since then, it has been widely used throughout the world and has been successfully able to deal with shingles in many cases. But a lot of questions have been raised regarding its safety as a percentage of people have suffered from serious side effects that are:

  • Pneumonia
  • vision loss
  • muscle weakness
  • heart failure
  • death

The vaccine is claimed to be defective, dangerous, and unsafe by many people. There is a particularly high risk for elder patients that have weak immune systems.

Is there a substitute?

A new vaccine for Shingles was launched in 2017 that goes by the name ‘Shingrix’. As this is not a live vaccine, it is recommended over Zostavax. There are also complications regarding this vaccine as many lawsuits have been filed but its manufacturer claims the vaccine to be 90% effective.
